Labels are Helpful/Confusing/All of the Above

So a woman I have begun interacting with called me a “very feminine butch.”

Is this a win?  A loss? A mix-up? It feels sort of positive, but honestly  I have no idea.

I suspect that most butches are way more masculine than me. And honestly, Ellen Degeneres is way more butch than me.

So who am I and how much does it matter” Labels are so misleading, and yet they help us figure ourselves out.

It is the age old problem – is butch a sexual identity, a clothing style, a gender identity, or a little bit of each? It is not a fixed point on a spectrum – it is a huge range. Some butches may have more of a masculine gender “expression” – but that is only one part of being butch (but it is an obvious and visible part and some people forget all the rest). Rest assured, you are butch, and butch enough.

It’s funny. I only came out recently and I happened to mention my collection of cufflinks and pocket squares to my lesbian sister, and she said, “Oh, you’re that kind.”
